Civil War Stories | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| BURIED BEDCOVER Another Battle of Pea Ridge story handed down through the same family centers around a coverlet . It concerned the same two young ladies who witnessed the bushwhacking murder , but the story actually involved their parents, Samuel and Polly Ford Ruddick. The Ruddicks had been married in 1841, and as the Battle of Pea Ridge loomed as a possibility, they had several children, including the married, daughter Elizabeth Ruddick Vandagriff, and were expecting another baby. The Samuel Ruddicks lived on what we know today as the Pea Ridge battlefield. They knew it as their farm and home.Their children still at home included Jane, then about 14, Mary, then 12; then there was July, who grew up to marry George Ford and John, who would one day marry Rachel Pratt. Another son, George, had died as a small child. One of their sons, William, was already in the gray uniform of the Confederacy, And was to be taken prisoner during the battle of Pea Ridge, his parents would never receive but one letter from him before he died in prison in Springfield, MO. Meantime, the battle clouds were gathering dark and ominous over the Samuel Ruddick farm, and Mrs. Ruddick was in labor. The day before the battle began, on March 5, 1862, she gave birth to another baby, but it was dead. Wrapping the dead baby as best they could, the family prepared to vacate their home. The mother and her teenaged daughters had woven some coverlets, and the wagon would not hold more nor the team pull a greater load than the family and the most necessary articles. Still, the mother and daughters hated to leave the coverlets behind.They buried them in the barnlot and the family, carrying the dead baby with them, rode from their home to seek protection from the fierce gunfire that was to come with the dawn. When the wagon reached Providence, near what is today known as Brightwater, they stopped and buried the infant in the cemetery there, and the rest of the family continued their sad journey. They rode on to White River, and there they stayed until the Battle of Pea Ridge was over three days later.Returning to their home on what had become part of the Pea Ridge Battlefield, they found their home, farm buildings and all destroyed. Only the coverlets, buried in the barnlot, remained. A granddaughter, Mrs. Leon Vansandt, still has the one that belonged to Jane, who would later marry Perry L. Foster and become the grandmother of Mrs. Vansandt. HORRORS OF WAR CONTINUE After the Samuel Ruddicks returned to Elkhorn, they settled on a farm west of Elkhorn.One evening, bushwhackers rode up the road to the Ruddick home and were going to take the father, Samuel. His fate seemed sure: death at the hands of the bushwhackers. By a strange twist of fate, Samuel Ruddick was to be spared.The story is told that he was a Mason, and one of his daughters, Isabelle was an Eastern Star. Isabelle had made a Masonic sign and placed it over the door. Included in the gang that had beset them was one man, who was a Mason. Seeing the sign, he prevented the other bushwhackers from taking Samuel. NEED FOR SALT WAS GREAT One absolute need in the family was salt. Salt could not be obtained without a permit, and the permits had to be obtained in Fayetteville - located 30 miles away with only nearly impassable roads in between. However, one of the daughters, Jane Ruddick, and some of the other women of the vicinity got an ox-drawn wagon and set out for Fayetteville. They succeeded in getting only one permit, and it was only good for one pound of salt each. All the way back from Fayetteville they came, and turning in another direction, they traveled to Cassville, MO, county seat of the next county. There they used the permits in obtaining a pound of salt for each family. This traveling amounted to several days altogether. There was snow and ice on the ground. In addition, the woman driving the oxen let them run the wagon out of the road and get astride of a stump. It was no easy feat for the wagon full of women to to free the vehicle and proceed on their way.
